This Blog

This blog is designed to reflect on my experiences with technology integration throughout the Fall Semester of 2010. It is being written in accordance with guidelines given in MEDT 7464 – Technology Integration. Hopefully by the end of the semester it will be a good resource that can be used as a reference tool for my own teaching as well as something that I can share with my department. My goal is to give a thoughtful post to each writing prompt that will be insightful and meaningful. I hope that it will continue to help in my endeavor to increase student learning and achievement throughout my department.

The website I am currently featuring is titled Rubistar. Rubistar is a free tool that helps teachers create rubrics for project-based learning activities. It requires teachers to register in order to use the site and create rubrics. The site also features the ability to make rubrics interactive. The rubrics can be used with Blackboard and Moodle. Users can also download their file to an Excel Spreadsheet. There are also customizable rubric templates that are available. This seems to be a useful site that can help in the assessment of technology projects in any grade level. I have enjoyed browsing through it and hope that you will too!

Reflection - 8/31/10

After the first week or so of researching technology integration I see many things differently than I did before. Throughout the past year or so I have been involved with classes that teach me certain aspects of technology and their use in the classroom. The Technology Integration class is bringing it all together for me. I am seeing how important it is to not only integrate technology but to do so in a way that is beneficial for student learning. Being able to tie technology use to standards and concepts is vital for its success. All music classes have specific standards relating to technology, mostly dealing with the use of notation software, but that is just the tip of the iceburg so to speak. Many standards that we have can be tied to technology use and integration in some way.

Why should we go to the trouble? Because it helps with student learning. It is a wonderful aid which can differentiate instruction so that you are able to reach all students. I see many examples where technology is not used effectively within classrooms. It is used just to show text and give notes, not to engage and enlighten. Each one of us needs to look within ourselves and see if what we are doing is truly effective.  We need to ask, "What can I do to make sure this doesn't happen?"
